First timer?
The newest studio, built for first visits
Lynnwood is the newest of Soul Massage Head Spa's four studios, at 3105 Alderwood Mall Blvd #112 — about 5 minutes from Alderwood, 10 from Mountlake Terrace, 12 from Edmonds. Newest turns out to be convenient for the uninitiated: a large share of the guests in these chairs are having their first Japanese head spa anywhere, so this page walks the whole thing from booking to blow-dry. By the end, the only surprise left should be how it feels.
A Japanese head spa, in one breath: your scalp gets treated as skin. That means a professional cleanse, a gentle exfoliation, a deliberate massage, and a long warm rinse at a hydrotherapy basin — 60 minutes for a first session, $78 cash — with your hair dried and lightly oiled before you stand up. Nothing in the sequence requires anything from you except showing up.
It also helps to say what a head spa is not, because first visits tend to arrive carrying the wrong picture. It is not a haircut — nobody cuts anything, and you don't need to come freshly trimmed or styled. It is not a medical treatment, and we never claim otherwise. And it is not the two-minute wash that happens before a trim. The nearest honest comparison is a facial that happens to live on your scalp: staged, warm, deliberate, and finished properly at minute 60.
What to expect
Before, during, and after
Head spa prep is blessedly short. You don't wash your hair beforehand — the session opens with a Milbon purifying shampoo cleanse, so arriving with a day-old scalp is expected, even preferable. What actually matters:
- Arrive about 10 minutes early — a late start shortens your own session, since the next booking is fixed.
- Leave jewelry at home, and set your phone to silent before you recline.
- Have two answers ready: massage pressure and water temperature are both set to your preference, and you can change either mid-session.
- Bringing a minor? Kids are welcome with a parent or guardian in the studio.
- Running late anyway? Call or text (425) 866-1858 — the session can still happen, but it ends on schedule, so the missing minutes come out of yours.
During: the sequence
You recline face-up at a warm-water basin, in a private room rather than an open salon floor. Cleanse first, then a detoxifying scalp exfoliation, then the head-neck-shoulder massage — pressure work of the kind covered in NCCIH's overview of massage therapy — then a conditioning treatment and the hydrotherapy rinse. First-timers tend to go quietest during the rinse; that's normal. If anything is ever uncomfortable, say so: the session stops, and you're not charged. The fuller stage-by-stage picture lives in our what-happens-during-a-head-spa guide.
After: the finish
Every session ends with a basic blow-dry — Dyson dryer, Moroccan hair oil — so you leave with dry, brushed-out hair rather than a wet bun. Styling and curling aren't included. Most guests describe the rest of the day as noticeably slower, in the good sense; Mayo Clinic's material on relaxation techniques explains the physiology behind that looser-shouldered feeling better than we can.
The four rituals, briefly
First visits mostly book the Signature, but the menu holds four rituals, and the other three run 90 minutes at $135 cash. The Luxury opens with a 30-minute upper-body massage and adds aromatherapy — it's also the required choice for hair past chest-length that's also thick. The Chinese Herb finishes its hydrotherapy with an herbal tea rinse and adds hair steam. The Deep Clean Scalp doubles down on cleansing: a dedicated deep clean plus steam, the pick for oily or product-heavy scalps. All four end with the same blow-dry, and all four cost $10 more by card.
The money
What a first visit costs, to the dollar
The 60-minute Signature is $78 cash or $88 card — the $10 gap is the standing cash discount at all four studios, not a sale that ends. The three 90-minute rituals (Luxury, Chinese Herb, Deep Clean Scalp) are each $135 cash. Gratuity isn't included; tips are customary. If plans change, cancel with 24 hours' notice — inside 24 hours a 50% fee applies, and a no-call no-show is charged in full.
One sizing rule to know before you pick: hair past chest-length that's also thick should book the 90-minute Luxury rather than the Signature — it's the ritual built with enough time to deep-cleanse and moisturize dense hair properly. Everything on the full menu runs identically at all four studios, so a first visit here prices the same as anywhere in the family.
Payment works the way the prices imply: cash preferred — that's where the $10 saving comes from — with Visa, Mastercard, and Discover accepted. Gift certificates run through Square, and a first visit is often somebody's gift; the certificate covers any ritual on the menu. Tips are customary and never folded into a listed price.
Getting here
Lynnwood, Alderwood, and the towns west
The studio's corner of Alderwood Mall Blvd catches the whole southwest of the county: Alderwood itself is about 5 minutes, Brier 10, Mountlake Terrace 10, Edmonds 12, Shoreline 15. Hours run 10 AM to 9 PM daily — the earliest close in the Soul family, worth knowing if you book after dinner; night owls can use the Everett studio, which runs until 10 PM.
One operational quirk sets Lynnwood apart: booking runs through Fresha rather than Setmore. Online, that's simply the booking button on this page; by phone or text, (425) 866-1858 reaches the desk directly, and walk-ins take the next open station like anywhere else. Once you've had the first session, the full Lynnwood studio page covers the studio in fuller local detail — and the return cadence question answers itself at every 3 to 4 weeks.
If the 9 PM close crowds your schedule, the family covers you: Mill Creek runs 9:30 AM to 9:30 PM and Everett until 10 PM, with the identical menu and prices at each. But for Edmonds, Shoreline, and Mountlake Terrace, this studio is the short drive — 15 minutes or less, all three.
Book it
A first session, booked in a minute
Pick the Signature unless the hair-length rule sends you to the Luxury. Book through Fresha, or call or text (425) 866-1858 with the service, how many guests, and your preferred time. Arrive 10 minutes early. That's the entire onboarding — no forms worth dreading, no products to bring, no haircut required before someone touches your hair. If the ritual takes, you'll have a standing 60 minutes where nobody can reach you, five minutes from Alderwood.
What happens after a good first session is predictable enough that we'll just say it: the second booking. Guests who want more than the hour look at the combos — a 60-minute head spa plus a 60-minute moisturizing facial runs 120 minutes at $188 cash, and the massage-plus-head-spa pairing is $153 for the same length. Neither is required. The $78 hour stands perfectly well on its own.
Nobody is born knowing what a head spa is. That's what the first visit is for.
